When it comes to holiday shopping, Pam McCurdy is truly Minnesota nice. "I really like to shop local," says McCurdy. "I feel like giving my money to people in the community is a way to give back and to give unique gifts." So McCurdy stays away from big box stores and online retailers, instead opting to shop at places like Minnesota Makers in downtown Robbinsdale. "When you give your money to a local owner, you are buying things for their family and their livelihood," she said. Store owners Christa and Jay Kalk moved their shop from south Minneapolis in late summer. From the art to the jewelry, every product is Minnesota made, and Jay and Christa can tell you about the product and the artist. "We talk about the artists," said Christa Kalk. "We talk about who they are and what they make and we are very thankful for the people that come in and spend money on the artists." Christa says they've seen an increase in people committed to keeping their dollars local. "I think people have been shying away from buying things that are less expensive and paying for things that are a little bit more, but are staying local," Kalk said. If you do have a local shopping commitment, make a list. Look in local shops, but don't count out giving local experiences too. "The craft breweries, restaurants and salons," Kalk said. "Be creative and think about where you can go. How fun is it to come in here?"
